Cowboy says : a retired horse has “earned his grass”
in western poetry it sometimes referred to as the greatest range of all where the sun never sets. Horses that have served their time deserve to graze freely without the weight of the saddle. These horses have not always been ours be we choose to honor the work that they have done throughout their lives. We consider this a high honor.
Just because a. horse is “out to pasture” doesn’t mean they are idle. These old guys are perfect for teaching children or even first time adults. They are perfectly patient in training us first timers and help us learn the ropes around basic horsemanship. They are also therapy horses on occasion.
A final purpose…
We were originally approached by a local boarding facility at the end of 2025 about one horse. A Senior horse that was taking up space at the barn. Beloved, goofy and painted, Checkers was an easy YES for our family! Before we could get prepared for his arrival, the same folks asked if we would be willing to take on another senior horse, Sonny.
First time for everything! We had never owned horses before. With land to spare, our hearts jumping out of our chest, we pushed past the self doubt and got to work. Today the boys are living their best lives at Old Moon Ranch and we couldn’t imagine life without them.
say hi to Checkers + Sonny
We said yes
